When I tell someone that I am a Boudoir Photographer, the most common response is “What is boudoir?”
There are so many layers involved with the answer to this question. Boudoir is a French word that means ‘a woman’s bedroom or private room.’ It is derived from the French word bouder which means to pout, sulk. So, there is some context that it was also a room for a woman to go to sulk.
I always say to think of ‘Downton Abbey.’ It is a drama series that focuses on the aristocratic life and their servants. It starts in the year 1912 with the sinking of the Titanic and ends somewhere in the late 1920s. If you have not watched it, I think you should. You will find a loving balance between the different social hierarchy of the time and the love they have for all!
And you’ll see boudoir settings!!
Ironically, Boudoir photography was originated in the 1920s. The same era ‘Downton’ takes us through. A lot of changes for women were happening in the 1920s, and it all started with the catalyst of the 19th Amendment being ratified in 1919. This amendment, which gave the women the right to vote, was part of the Women’s Suffrage Movement.
Boudoir photography was created for plus size women, capturing them within their intimate dressing place. Nudity at the start was illegal, and I am sure some artist dabbled with it. Ohhhh! Think of Jack in the Titanic! That part as an artist drawing naked French women, I am sure I 10000% true!
If you google, ‘Boudoir Photography Meaning,’ you will find the following definition:
This true! They are intimate photos; I will pose you to flatter your curves and I will capture the beauty of your body. However, do you remember at the beginning of this article I mentioned there are more layers?
Now, if you google, ‘What is the point of boudoir photography?’ you will find the following explanation:
Again true! You are going to feel romantic. I have heard stories that women who have gifted an album of boudoir photos to their husband end up pregnant in a few months. So, for some that romance overflows to the home. This is just the foundation for me!
My studio is a safe space for women to come to for these intimate portraits. Within my four walls the goal is for women to reconnect with themselves. We tend to get caught up in the fast track of life, especially as women. I know I am guilty of this!
I want to bring you back to you! What I want for you is to enter my studio and feel the sexiness and confidence that everyone wants to feel! I want to capture the essence of the person you really are a strong, independent, powerful woman!
It is a day to yourself, starting with the prep work of shopping for yourself. Self-care and Self-love are never Self-ish. We just sometimes forget that it is okay! Let’s explore that inner ego that you are taught to push down and ignore. Through this we will find that sexy confidence and increase your self-esteem.
You will remember that you have courage to do and try something out of your comfort zone. As well as the strength to get through it.
Everyone that is over the age of 18! There are so many subniches of boudoir, such as men’s boudoir, couple’s boudoir and erotica. It is truly for everyone! No matter size or shape we are humans that deserve to love ourselves and feel empowered.
