When I started my photography business, I was faced with so many decisions. Where would my studio be located? What will I charge for my services? What services will I offer? I should find an accountant! Do I need to upgrade my equipment?
For the most part some of these were easy to answer, especially since I found boudoir! I cannot express how much I LOVE boudoir!! It is such an empowering process to witness through my camera lens and I am honored to provide a safe space for women to find that!
Ultimately, the biggest question I had was “What is my business name going to be and will I have a logo?” Now even though everything doesn’t have to be one hundred percent perfect when starting your business, I wanted my name and logo to be a foundation.
After a few girl talk sessions with a fellow entrepreneur, friend and role model I decided on my name. Melissa Jackson Photography. Through our discussions the one thing we always came back to is: ME!
So why would I not name MY business after MY-self!!!
Now for my logo I wanted to make sure it was perfect. I didn’t want to choose something I wouldn’t love in a few years and ultimately feel the need to rebrand. One image that kept popping into my head was butterflies (thank you spirit guides!).
I had long discussions with the artist who was designing my logo and I mentioned butterflies. He thought it was a great idea, and I should send him some photos for inspirations. Although, I had one better!
I have a tattoo on my right wrist. It is a semicolon butterfly to signify my moments with suicidal ideation. He took a picture of it and opened it’s wings to create my beautiful logo! It was better than I could even have imagined.
Butterflies are the “Masters of Metamorphosis” and have a deep spiritual symbolism. There are many Native American tribes that believe ancestors communicated through butterflies and they represented hope and good luck. They can also represent freedom and transformation!
A butterfly starts its life cycle as an egg, then transforms to larvae (caterpillar). After some time, a caterpillar goes into a cocoon. While inside the cocoon the caterpillar’s body dies and emerges as a butterfly with beautiful wings.
We have all spent moments watching butterflies move through nature. When butterflies land they normally hold their wings in an upright position, exposing a natural desaturated side of their wing. This side is used to blend into their surroundings from predators.
On the other side of their wings are beautiful vibrant colorful patterns. This side is usually hidden until needed because it is used to frighten predators. Their wings are their number one defense of protection.
My butterfly is not only a representation of me and my own transformation, but each one of you! Therefore, she is a symbol of every woman now, those that have come before her and those that will come after her!
She represents new beginnings and growth. Something that us as women are all too familiar with. However, when we listen to our inner voice and guide ourselves through trying times, then we can emerge as a woman that is stronger, bolder and better than before!
She represents the maturity that women go through in their life and power in which we hold. So, when we acknowledge and represent that power that we are born with our hidden beauty will shine, just like that of the butterfly!

Melissa
